Green Economics Institute Newsletter May 2020
We are delighted that the United Nations General Secretary has said that the Green Economy and Green Economics is the only way to tackle climate change successfully. This means there is renewed focus on our Institute and our work and we welcome all students and team members to join us to make our work as effective as possible in solving social and environmental justice and reforming economics and making Green Economics work better for the world, preventing poverty, biodiversity loss and climate change.
We are of course shocked and sadened by the global pandemic taking place at present.
We do believe that all life on earth is compromised at present and under serious pressure from man made environmental change.
We work very hard to point this out- as many people still have not realised. We believe that addressing this pressure will help human health and resilience improve at the same time and help us all conquer this awful pandemic.
Our forthcoming events deal with some of the aspects of this crisis and suggest ways forward for a more succesful and stronger future, These events include:

Smart Cities Webinar
Public values and technology in the corona crisis
Webinars 19th & 20th June 2020 On Line

The Green European Foundation and the Green Economics Institute are delighted to invite you to a webinar on smart cities in corona times. How do we ensure that the technologies that are being deployed in the corona crisis respect public values such as democracy, human dignity, privacy, equality and sustainability?
This webinar will gather experts, practitioners, activists and (local) politicians. The online discussions will cover two mornings. Participants can choose to take part in one session or in both sessions.
The webinar takes the Green European Foundation’s Charter for the Smart City as a starting point. The results of the webinar will feed into the online version of the Charter.
Draft programme
June 19th 10:00 – 12:00
- Presentation of the Charter for the Smart City, value-led development of technology and its relevance in times of corona by Richard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks, NL), followed by discussion.
- Presentation and discussion on digital surveillance. Will the corona crisis take the surveillance of citizens and workers to new heights? Can and should we counter this tendency? Is there a role for local politics?
June 20th 10:00 – 12:00
- Presentation and discussion on digital innovations. The corona crisis has given a boost to the digitalisation of work, commerce, education and social life. How do we deal with the socio-economic inequalities which arise from this? Can we prevent Big Tech from becoming even more powerful? What role for local politics?
- Presentation and discussion on a Green New Deal. The economic crisis and the climate crisis must be tackled simultaneously. Does this create new opportunities for green technologies? What role for local politics?
Platform
We will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You don’t need to install additional software. However, for the best user experience and full participation features, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App, which is for free.

Life on Earth- Surviving in a Corona World
Climate change and Environmental & Economic Meltdown
Ripped off in the service of homo economicus-women and minorities
Sunday 26th July 2020 On Line 1 Day Interactive event
It has never been so stark as under this pandemic-Women, Minorities,
air quality, nature, other species, all domesticated and ripped off in the service of homo economicus-
Mans’ contempt for nature and anything ‘other’
Expert speakers and break out rooms, exhibition stands and discussions
Networking as well as training to make a difference and showing each other solutions and change making.
During this pandemic it has become clearer just how much destruction homo sapien sapien has done to nature, women and other species.
Women are doing huge amounts more work in the lock down and many are more at risk of loosing their jobs.
This event explores- inequality, development, SDGs and generally mans destructive nature and its results and looks for new ways of running the economy which do not value destruction but flourishing, caring and sharing -a completely new way of doing economics.
Green Economics theory and philosophy infoms a renaissance of humanity on a better path to the future.
